“The Burial in Space”

The Boy Who Was Born in Space pats his Droid’s back in an attempt to comfort it, as the Boy has noticed that the Droid seems to be taking the parent’s burial harder than he is… then again, the Droid knew the parents longer than the Boy did.  You’re supposed to be sad when someone dies, after all.

Of course, to the Boy, his parents were ALWAYS dead… he never knew them any other way, since they had died due to a hibernation tank malfunction when the Boy was only a baby.  To him, they were just corpses in the broken hibernation tanks, floating along with him in space as they traveled to the private planet his parents had bought to raise a family on.

Their burial doesn’t change any of that, or add any closure… it always just ‘was’— it didn’t even need closure.  He never knew them.

And the only reason they stopped upon this tiny moon to bury the parents was because the corpses were becoming too rotted and stinky after 11 long years, even sealed within the broken tanks.

Intellectually, the Boy knew he was supposed to feel something (the educational videos stored on the ship had taught the Boy common societal constructs such as ‘family’), but he just… didn’t.

Still, he could sense that his Droid was beginning to resent the Boy’s lack of emotion over the burial, so the Boy forces out a tear by imagining how he’d feel if his Droid died.

After he had cried an appropriate amount, the Droid seems appeased… but the tears keep coming, as the Boy realizes he really doesn’t know what he’d do without his Droid.  It’s all he has.

As they blast off and resume the final half of their 20 year journey to the private planet, the Boy watches the tiny moon grow smaller and smaller until it disappears into the empty blackness of space.
